HOUSTON’S BLUE POOL

We discovered this pool in Houston’s Fifth Ward District. The Rainbow Inn was open for business (to mostly prostitutes, pimps and drug dealers), but the pool appeared to be inoperable. We drained the last couple of feet of water from the deep end and we had our spot. I think management was just glad to have it clean. We skated there for a year or so.The resultant staph infections from the many scrapes were pretty gross, but, hey, when you’re young, none of that matters. I apologize for the quality of this video – the 8mm film has been sitting in a box in my garage for 30 years. It definitely brings back some memories though! I have a buddy who I didn’t even know at the time tell me he skated it. Pretty wild. Anyone else out there skate this spot?

CATALINA CLASSIC 1977

Amazing footage of the original Catalina Classic race from 1977. John Hutson won the Downhill, and Bobby Piercy took first in the Slalom. Deanna Calkin was the Women’s Slalom winner. A lot of the top racers from back in the day are in here: Jamie Hart, Bob Skoldberg, Mike Goldman, Dennis Shufeldt, and more. Enjoy!

SENSATION BASIN 1979 PEPSI TEAM CHALLENGE II

Sensation Basin, Gainesville Florida hosted many of the competitions from the early days of skateboarding. The Pepsi Team Challenge II from 1979 was especially fun and many of the early stars of the sport called the park home. Pepsi has since gone on to sponsor the Extreme Games (X Games) with their Mountain Dew products.

Here’s a great site for the old school skateboard community and a little history about Sensation Basin.
